A Prime rated generator is one that is designed to be run 24/7. Usually there will be multiple generator sets, so if one set needs to be taken off line for repair there will be another to back it up. A backup generator is one intended to run when there is a grid power failure. Prime power generators are just one of three main gen set types: prime, continuous and standby.
